PHOENIX (AP) - The Arizona Department of Education has a new associate superintendent.

Robin Kauakahi was named Tuesday to the position that was previously held by Robert Gold.

Superintendent of Public Instruction Diane Douglas says Kauakahi will be responsible for Exceptional Student Services and Title I programs.

Douglas says Kauakahi will start work on Oct. 12.

She currently lives in Tucson and is the director of the Ha:sañ Preparatory and Leadership School.

That’s a bi-cultural public charter school specializing in children with exceptional needs and Tohono O’odham youth and Indian students interested in a college preparatory environment.

Douglas says Kauakahi has more than two decades of education and executive experience in Arizona.
