FRESNO, Calif. (AP) - Firefighters worked to extinguish a two-alarm blaze at an abandoned church in Fresno that had threatened nearby homes.

The Fresno Bee reports (https://bit.ly/1Ff6HGt ) dozens of firefighters had responded to the fire that erupted Tuesday night.

The building’s structure was entirely engulfed by flames, and winds had pushed the fire toward neighboring homes.

Firefighters evacuated the homes and worked to protect surrounding buildings.

Fire Battalion Chief Tony Escobedo says firefighters have been at the abandoned building half a dozen times within the last six months.

The fire is still being investigated.
