MADISON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - Authorities say a 7-year-old boy has died after falling from the bed of a pickup truck filled with scrap metal in southern Michigan.

The Lenawee County sheriff’s department says Ethan Halter was riding in the bed of the truck with his 10-year-old brother on Monday night in Madison Township when he fell and struck his head on the pavement. The department says he was taken to a hospital in Toledo, Ohio, where he died.

The Daily Telegram of Adrian reports the truck was leaving a driveway at the time the boy fell. The Blade of Toledo reports a trailer being hauled by the truck also was filled with scrap metal.

The department says the pickup was driven by an Adrian man, the boys’ 33-year-old father. The death is under investigation.
