VINTON, La. (AP) - The $45 million Delta Downs Racetrack Casino and Hotel expansion project has officially started.

Local and state leaders took part in the groundbreaking ceremony Wednesday.

KPLC-TV reports (https://bit.ly/1jbqCfk ) the first phase of the project will be the new pool, directly to the right of the hotel. The existing 200 hotel rooms will be renovated and 167 additional rooms will be constructed.

Boyd Gaming CEO and President William Boyd says the expansion will help meet the growing demand for visitors in the area.

Boyd Gaming owns the casino.

Vinton Mayor Kenneth Stinson says this is a great economic opportunity not only for Vinton but also for Calcasieu Parish as a whole.

The project is expected to be complete by the end of 2016.
