EXETER, R.I. (AP) - Fire crews are battling a compost fire the size of a football field at a farm in Exeter.

The fire in a pile of compost and brush was reported around 4 a.m. on Wednesday at the property owned by Schartner Farms.

Personnel from 12 departments are assisting and have brought in 16 tanker trucks to provide water because there are no hydrants nearby.

Chief David Chamberlain says they’re planning to pull apart the pile with excavating equipment to help extinguish it.

The Department of Environmental Management and state fire marshal are on the scene. The cause is not yet known.
