HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (AP) - A Long Island woman is accused of stealing $50,000 from a friend who asked her to help pay her bills while she recovered from a medical procedure.

Nassau County police say 52-year-old Maureen Adamo, of North Massapequa, was arrested Tuesday. They say she began forging checks from the victim’s account in January and deposited them into her own account.

Police say her 73-year-old friend had asked her to assist her with making sure her bills were paid while she recovered.

Adamo faces charges of grand larceny and criminal possession of a forged instrument. She’s due to be arraigned Wednesday in Hempstead.

It wasn’t immediately clear if she had a lawyer who could comment on the charges.
