NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) - Newport police continue to investigate what sparked a fight between two men that ended with a murder-suicide.

The men were found early Tuesday morning near each other on a brick patio. They were pronounced dead at the hospital.

Detective Capt. Russell Hayes tells The Newport Daily News police are investigating why 35-year-old Stephen Jemo shot 48-year-old Christopher Smith and then turned the gun on himself.

Police say the two were longtime friends and went to a bar together Monday night.

A witness said she heard them fighting outside Jemo’s apartment and tried to break it up. She says she saw Jemo shoot Smith and then shoot himself.

Police say no other weapons or drugs were found at the scene.
