AKRON, Ohio (AP) - Akron police say a tactical team member shot and wounded a man who reached behind his back to hide what officers quickly discovered was heroin.

A statement says 27-year-old Omar Ali of Copley was in stable condition after the shooting Monday night.

Police say SWAT members forced their way into Ali’s hookah bar after he refused to answer the door for officers investigating a domestic violence complaint. A police spokesman says Ali also was being investigated for drug trafficking.

Police say officers ordered Ali to step forward with his hands up, and an officer shot Ali in the upper torso when Ali reached behind his back to hide nearly 3 grams of heroin.

Charges against Ali include felony drug abuse and domestic violence. No attorney information was available for him.
