LEONARDTOWN, Md. (AP) - Authorities in southern Maryland say the St. Mary’s County sheriff was struck by a firetruck while helping at the scene of a crash in Leonardtown.

Sheriff’s office spokeswoman Jennifer Stone said Sheriff Timothy Cameron was providing care to the driver of a vehicle that crashed on Pin Cushion Road on Wednesday morning. Stone says a firetruck arrived at the crash scene and as it maneuvered into position, the firetruck hit Cameron, injuring him.

The driver of the car was flown to Prince George’s Hospital Center’s trauma center. Stone says Cameron was treated at MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital and later released. She says Cameron had abrasions, but no broken bones.

Deputies issued citations to the operator of the firetruck, 61-year-old Kenneth Scully, charging him with negligent driving and other offenses.
