HASTINGS, Mich. (AP) - A western Michigan man already accused of possessing a huge cache of child pornography was charged Wednesday with sexually assaulting a girl with Down syndrome.

Authorities in Barry County said the alleged abuse by David Heinsen, 69, involved an 8-year-old girl more than 25 years ago.

Heinsen told investigators that he photographed the assaults at his home in Nashville, 50 miles southeast of Grand Rapids, prosecutor Julie Nakfoor Pratt said.

“The victim has Down syndrome, possessed a limited vocabulary, so was unable to describe the atrocities suffered,” Pratt said.

The charge of first-degree criminal sexual conduct came a week after Heinsen was indicted in federal court with receiving and possessing child porn. Investigators said he had hundreds of thousands of images and thousands of videos. He also faces similar charges in state court.

An email seeking comment from his attorney wasn’t immediately answered Wednesday.

“You know, I’ve seen a lot of these things over the years. … But he’s attacked the innocent of the innocent. This is absolutely heinous,” Nashville Police Chief Chris Koster said.

Koster urged other victims to step forward.

“We’d be very surprised if there’s not any other victims,” he said.
