AKRON, Ohio (AP) - The Akron Zoo is seeking permission to serve beer, wine and liquor at events hosted after regular hours.

Councilwoman Margo Sommerville tells The Akron Beacon Journal (https://bit.ly/1iNjTsj ) that the zoo wants to serve alcohol strictly for private events, such as weddings or corporate retreats, not while the facility is open to the public.

Residents in Akron’s 3E precinct will vote on two liquor options on the Nov. 3 ballot that would give the zoo authorization to serve wine and liquor daily.

Zoo officials have also applied to the Ohio Division of Liquor Control for the right to sell beer.

Zoo President and CEO Doug Piekarz says Akron has Ohio’s only zoo without a liquor permit at least for special events.

Piekarz says serving alcohol would help attract more after-hours events.
