SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - An Oakland man is facing charges in a burglary that left a dog injured when it ate food that police say the suspects threw on top of broken glass.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports (https://bit.ly/1PwMD2m) 21-year-old Valdo Diaz was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of burglary, felony animal cruelty and a parole violation.

It’s unclear whether he has an attorney. He was scheduled to appear in court Thursday.

Police say Diaz and another suspect smashed the sliding glass door of a family’s home in Fremont, ransacked the interior and took jewelry and cash before throwing dog food on the glass as they left.

Marlie, the family pet, began eating the food. The dog has since recovered from cuts and other injuries.

Officials are asking anyone with information to contact Fremont police.
