HAZELWOOD, Mo. (AP) - A driver who allegedly fled after police tried to pull her over has died after crashing into a utility pole.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch (https://bit.ly/1G4AIDy ) reports that 23-year-old Tanya Brown of Black Jack died Wednesday morning.

A Hazelwood officer tried to stop a car at 12:20 a.m. Wednesday. Police say the car took off, speeding and running through stop lights.

Hazelwood Maj. Ken Jewson says the officer backed off, hoping the driver would slow down, but she didn’t. Jewson says the officer did not chase the car, but slowed down and tried to follow it.

As police were searching for the runaway driver, they found the car, which had slammed into a pole.

Brown was pronounced dead at the scene. She was alone in the car.
