AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - Gov. Greg Abbott has awarded Texas Purple Hearts to four state Army National Guard members injured while serving in Egypt this month.

The four were part of a multinational mission to Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula. They sustained non-life-threatening injuries following a blast from an improvised explosive device Sept. 3.

Abbott presided over a ceremony Thursday at Brooke Army Medical Center at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio.

The recipients were Spc. James Burkett from San Antonio; Pfc. Jose Romo of Pasadena; Staff Sgt. Guadalupe Chapa of Corpus Christi and Sgt. Michael Cantu, from Uvalde.

All had already received federal Purple Hearts for those wounded or killed while serving in the U.S. military.

Texas Purple Hearts go to wounded or killed state military members inducted into federal service after Sept. 11, 2001.
