NEW ORLEANS (AP) - A 50-year-old New Orleans man accused of sexually assaulting his girlfriend’s mentally disabled daughter has been found guilty of attempted aggravated rape.

NOLA.com/The Times-Picayune (https://bit.ly/1FvyGS50 ) reports that Daniel L. Castro was convicted Wednesday by an Orleans Parish jury and faces 10 to 50 years in prison when he returns for sentencing Oct. 23.

Jurors reached their verdict by a vote of 11-1, opting for the lesser charge of attempted aggravated rape. Castro faced an automatic life sentence if he had been found guilty of aggravated rape. At least 10 jurors had to concur to convict Castro.

Prosecutors said Castro sexually assaulted a 25-year-old woman who is unable to communicate verbally or control her bodily functions. Castro had been living with the woman and her mother in their New Orleans apartment.
