YANCEYVILLE, N.C. (AP) - A Burlington man has been sentenced to up to 31 years in prison for killing his girlfriend in Caswell County more than three years ago.

The Times-News of Burlington reported (https://bit.ly/1L8jXPz ) Wednesday that 28-year-old Tyson Lavar Jones pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and first-degree kidnapping.

Superior Court Judge W. Osmond Smith sentenced Jones to between 24 years and 31 years in prison.

Prosecutors say Jones shot 19-year-old Ana Henriquez of Burlington as she ran from him in 2012. An autopsy showed she had been shot twice in the head and once in the leg.

She previously had a protective order against Jones.

Jones originally was charged with first-degree murder and prosecutors had said they would seek a death sentence if he was convicted.
