SUGAR LAND, Texas (AP) - Police say a mother and son have been found fatally shot in her room at a Houston-area nursing home in an apparent murder-suicide on his birthday.

Sugar Land police say the bodies were discovered Thursday morning at the Crescent.

Police spokesman Doug Adolph says investigators believe 31-year-old Tyler Hatfield fatally shot his mother, 61-year-old Beverley Hatfield, then killed himself. Both were from nearby Richmond.

Adolph says the mother was in a vegetative state and had been in the nursing home since Sept. 1. Adolph says the woman had a medical condition he described as a ruptured aneurysm.

Adolph says Tyler Hatfield visited his mother on a regular basis and was known to be very attentive to her needs.

Sugar Land is 10 miles southwest of Houston.
