RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Virginia State Police say a man was fatally shot by a Grayson County deputy after he fired at handgun at the officer.

State police say in a news release that the shooting occurred Wednesday evening as the deputy was attempting to interview the man at a residence on Corners Rock Road. The deputy went to the residence to follow up on two separate hit-and-run investigations in Grayson and Wythe counties.

State police say the man shot at the deputy as the officer approached him to conduct a pat-down for possible weapons. The deputy returned fire and the man died at the scene.

The deputy wasn’t injured.

The man, who was white, hasn’t been identified.
