FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (AP) - A Flagstaff couple who had been reported missing has been found dead in a wooded area of the San Francisco Peaks, and authorities say they were apparently shot but that circumstances remain unclear.

The Coconino County Sheriff’s Office said searchers found the bodies of 23-year-old Ashley Darby and 35-year-old Jeriah Hildwine on Wednesday.

Sheriff’s spokesman Gerry Blair said a suicide note was found in Darby’s vehicle at a trailhead parking lot and that the bodies were found about 1/3 of a mile away.

According to Blair, a hangun was found in Hildwine’s hand and that possible scenarios include double suicide and homicide-suicide.

He added that authorities may never be sure what happened.

The couple was reported missing in early September. Blair said they’d been dead for at least several days.
