HAMPTON, S.C. (AP) - State agents are investigating after a Hampton police officer fired a shot at someone who was fighting with him.

State Law Enforcement Division spokesman Thom Berry said the shooting happened early Thursday morning.

Berry says the officer recognized the man and the two began to struggle. The officer fired one shot and the man ran away.

Berry says investigators think a man who sought help for a gunshot wound to the hand at a hospital several hours later is the person who fought with the officer.

SLED says the officer wasn’t injured.

The name of the officer and the other person weren’t released.

A man answering the phone at the Hampton Police Department says the chief left for the day and he couldn’t take a message for him.
