COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - A yearlong series of monthly talks on the role of cotton in society is beginning at the University of South Carolina.

The inaugural address in the series is being delivered by Harvard scholar Sven Beckert on Thursday at 6 p.m.

It will take place in the Booker T. Washington Auditorium on the Columbia campus.

Beckert is the Laird Professor of History at Harvard University. His 2014 book, “Empire of Cotton: the Global Origins of Modern Capitalism,” won the Bancroft Prize and was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize.

The monthly series of talks will feature scholars and speakers who represent disciplines ranging from history, photography, film, literature, sociology and economics. Beckert’s talk is sponsored by the Department of History in the university’s College of Arts and Sciences.
