SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. (AP) - The battered lawn at a popular outdoor concert venue in upstate New York is getting replaced.

The Daily Gazette of Schenectady reports (https://bit.ly/1Vcf1IJ ) that crews have begun laying sod grass on the sloping lawn outside the amphitheater at Saratoga Performing Arts Center. The move comes after a yearlong effort to reseed the lawn failed to take root.

SPAC’s (spaks) lawn gets heavy use each summer by the throngs of country and rock music fans attending concerts starting in May and running into early September. By mid-summer in recent years, much of the lawn has been trampled into bare dirt.

The situation has irked customers who like to sit on the lawn during performances by the New York City Ballet and Philadelphia Orchestra.

The new lawn will greet fans for the 2016 season, when SPAC celebrates its 50th anniversary.
