BENNINGTON, Vt. (AP) - A Vermont day care provider is facing misdemeanor charges after a 3-year-old under her care burned her feet in what was thought to be an extinguished fire pit.

Thirty-two-year-old Jessica Quinn, of Bennington, pleaded not guilty Monday in Vermont Superior Court to reckless endangerment and cruelty to a child under 10.

Police say a 3-year-old child was taken to Southwestern Vermont Medical Center with burns on both of her feet on Aug. 4 after she ran unsupervised through a fire pit in Quinn’s yard.

The mother of the child told investigators she suffered second and third degree burns to her feet and that she may need skin grafts.

Quinn said she used the fire pit on Aug. 1 and that she sprayed it with a hose the next day.
