BALTIMORE (AP) - A Baltimore animal shelter will be putting 53 Chihuahuas up for adoption.

The Baltimore Sun (https://bsun.md/1VdCSgD ) reports officials at the Baltimore Animal Rescue and Care Shelter say some of the dogs will be put up for adoption starting Friday. More will be available in the subsequent days.

The shelter rescued the dogs after officials say animal control officers were alerted to an unlicensed home-breeding operation.

The shelter’s executive director Jennifer Brause says the shelter needs to find homes for the dogs because handling so many animals on short notice is “always a hardship.”

The dogs will be spayed or neutered, vaccinated and microchipped before being put up for adoption. Officials say they expect the dogs to find new homes quickly.
