AKRON, Ohio (AP) - A baby sitter in northeast Ohio has been sentenced to five years in prison in the death of a 7-week-old baby last year.

The sitter, 50-year-old Laura Flores-Santillan, had entered Alford pleas in Akron in August to reckless homicide and child endangering. That means she maintained her innocence but acknowledged prosecutors had enough evidence to convict her. She told the judge she was innocent.

Investigators say the 7-week-old baby suffered a traumatic brain injury in September 2014 and died five days later. They think the child’s head hit something while she was being shaken.

Her defense attorney says she entered the plea to spare herself a possible life sentence if she’d been found guilty of murder.

Officials say the Mexican immigrant faces deportation after serving her prison sentence.
