ROCHESTER, N.Y. (AP) - A proposal to rename a post office for a fallen Rochester police officer has been approved in the House of Representatives.

Rep. Louise Slaughter said the passage marks a critical step forward in renaming the East Rochester Post Office to the Officer Daryl R. Pierson Memorial Post Office Building.

The 32-year-old officer was gunned down by a parolee in 2014 after a brief foot chase. Pierson left behind a wife and two young children. His killer is serving a life sentence.

The Senate is expected to consider the bill next month.
