JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - A former assistant professor at the University of Southern Mississippi has joined the staff of the Mississippi University Research Center as a senior economist.

In a news release Thursday, State Economist and center director, Dr. Darrin Webb, says Dr. Sondra Collins will help with research in health economics, public policy, poverty and income inequality while focusing on other systemic challenges facing Mississippi. Webb says Collins holds a “keen understanding” of the state’s challenges that makes her an ideal fit for the post.

Collins will serve as editor of a publication planned to launch in 2016 that focuses on those issues and will also solicit research from the eight public universities in the system.
