CRYSTAL LAKE, Ill. (AP) - A suburban Chicago school district will tear down sports stadium bleachers after the state Supreme Court ruled the district wrongfully ignored local building codes in constructing the structure in 2013.

A statement by Crystal Lake Community High School District 155 said officials were disappointed with Thursday’s ruling and will “move forward in a cooperative and respectful manner” with the city and neighbors.

The district built the 50-foot-tall, $1.2 million stands without the city’s permission and did not abide by local regulations on height and setback. Nearby homeowners sued, complaining the bleachers towered over their houses, hurt their property values and invaded their privacy.

When the bleachers will be removed is unclear. Officials said they expect fall sports and other events to be completed before the demolition begins.
