Kenneth T. Cuccinelli II, the president of the Senate Conservatives Fund, said Friday the news that House Speaker John A. Boehner will resign next month “is welcomed by conservatives across the country.”

“As Speaker of the House, John Boehner was hostile towards conservatives and our principles,” said Mr. Cuccinelli, the former attorney general of Virginia. “Rather than fighting President Obama and his liberal policies, Speaker Boehner embraced them and betrayed his party’s own voters.”

SCF is a group that works to elect conservatives to the U.S. Senate, and the organization’s efforts have included attacking GOP incumbents it deems insufficiently conservative.

“The next Speaker of the House must be willing to defend the Constitution and stand up for the principles of freedom that make our nation great,” said Mr. Cuccinelli, who lost a 2013 bid for Virginia governor to Gov. Terry McAuliffe.
