PRESCOTT, Ariz. (AP) - A lawmaker says he was not admitting to driving while intoxicated when he commented during the first of four legislative committee meetings on group homes.

The Daily Courier reports (https://bit.ly/1LCGsec) Rep. Noel Campbell is quoted as saying during the Thursday meeting that, “I’m one of those guys that had a drink in the last 30 days and God forbid I have driven after, you know, I’ve had a few shots, and been lucky.”

The Prescott Republican was addressing Anita Smith, who said she was a recovering alcoholic living in a group home. She asked where recovering individuals were expected to go if sober living communities are shut down.

Campbell denied driving while intoxicated, saying that is not what his comments were intended to convey.
