DURHAM, N.C. (AP) - Police in Durham say the passenger inside a car was killed after the driver tried to elude a police officer trying to stop him.

Authorities say an officer spotted the car speeding, began following it and turned on his flashing lights. A statement from Durham police says the car went off the road and into the woods just west of N.C. 55 and south of Interstate 40.

The accident occurred Thursday around 4:15 p.m.

Spokesman Wil Glenn said Friday that 31-year-old Jehdon Shenard Ramsey of Durham was charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle. Glenn said an investigation was continuing. Ramsey was hospitalized with serious injuries.

Authorities identified the passenger as 27-year-old Andrew Terry of Henderson.
