MISSOULA, Mont. (AP) - The Missoula City Council is considering requiring background checks on gun buyers before all sales, including those between private parties.

The Missoulian reports (https://bit.ly/1G6cetO ) that the City Council’s Public Safety and Health Committee on Wednesday approved an ordinance that will require criminal background checks for all gun sales and transfers within city limits, with the exception of transfers between family members or the transfer of antique firearms between collectors.

Currently only federally licensed firearms dealers are required to run background checks on buyers.

The full City Council will do the first of two readings of the ordinance Oct. 19.
