NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. (AP) - A power boat ran into a nine-woman crew team from the University of California Irvine, splitting their boat in half but leaving only one of them injured.

Sheriff’s Lt. Jeff Hallock says four men in their early 20s were headed out to fish on a 22-foot Wellcraft sport boat on Friday morning.

Hallock says the men apparently weren’t paying attention despite shouts from team members, and by the time they saw the rowing vessel it was too late. The boat was splintered in two.

One woman was taken to hospital, possibly with a broken foot.

Hallock says it hasn’t been decided whether the power boat operator will be cited or arrested.
