CRANSTON, R.I. (AP) - A Rhode Island police officer who rescued a driver from a burning car has been honored for his heroism.

The Providence Journal (https://bit.ly/1MMCvVQ ) reports that Cranston Officer Brenton Medeiros received the Medal of Valor this week from the New England Association of Chiefs of Police.

The medal is awarded to officers who show extraordinary heroism. The officer must be fully aware of the imminent threat to his or her personal safety and have acted above and beyond the call of duty, risking his or her own life or well-being.

Medeiros was driving on Interstate 195 in East Providence on March 24 when he saw a burning car. He scaled a chain link fence, pulled the driver out of the car and dragged him to safety.
