ELKO, Nev. (AP) - A Searchlight judge and his adult son are recovering from injuries they suffered in a small plane crash shortly after taking off from Elko Regional Airport.

Justice of the Peace Richard Hill was piloting the 1973 single-engine Piper Cherokee when it lost power at an altitude of about 2,600 feet and crashed just before 1:30 p.m. Wednesday near the Mountain City Highway.

Searchlight Justice Court Clerk Leslie Coon told the Elko Daily Free Press the judge was “banged up” with some bruises. His son, David, broke his sternum. They spent the night at Northeastern Nevada Regional Hospital in Elko, but were released on Thursday.

The National Transportation Safety Board and Federal Aviation Administration are investigating the cause of the accident.
