LAS VEGAS (AP) - Police say it could take weeks or longer to identify a corpse and a killer after a badly decomposed body was found this week in a duffel bag in an underground utility vault in Las Vegas.

Officer Michael Rodriguez said Friday that investigators couldn’t immediately tell the gender of the dead person or when the body was stuffed into a water district valve locker.

A utility worker found a broken lock and lifted the lid on the vault to make the gruesome discovery Tuesday afternoon.

Police said a human hand was seen before homicide detectives were summoned to the site behind a complex of extended-stay suites and Boulder Highway casinos southeast of downtown.

Rodriguez says police are reviewing missing person reports from Las Vegas and other jurisdictions.
