SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) - The U.S. Department of Agriculture says the number of hogs and pigs in the state is up 5 percent from the same time last year.

The South Dakota office of the National Agricultural Statistics Service says there were 1.33 million head on September 1, a 5 percent increase over the same time last year and a 1 percent increase from June 1.

The breeding hog inventory of 170,000 is a 3 percent decrease over the same time last year, but the 1.16 million market hogs are a 6 percent jump from last year and a 1 percent jump from last quarter.

The June-August 2015 pig crop of 977,000 head was up 3 percent from 2014. Sows farrowed during the period totaled 90,000 head, up 5 percent from last year.
