FULLERTON, Calif. (AP) - Authorities say a stolen-car suspect chased by police apparently shot himself to death after ditching the vehicle and running across freeway lanes in Orange County.

Corporal Bret Carter of the Buena Park Police Department says the pursuit began Thursday night in his city and wound through Anaheim and into Fullerton.

Carter says after the suspect attempted to get on State Route 91 by driving up the off-ramp, he exited the car, ran through traffic and hid under heavy equipment in a construction zone.

When an officer approached he heard a gunshot. Police found the suspect dead with a gunshot wound to the head. The man’s name has not been released.

The Orange County Register reports (https://bit.ly/1Flfhnh) the entire freeway was briefly shut down before reopening around 9:15 p.m.
