CLINTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - Authorities say they’ve charged a suburban Detroit couple in the August death of an 18-month-old boy who was physically abused.

Macomb County Prosecutor Eric Smith announced Friday that 23-year-old William Mark Warren III is charged with felony murder and first-degree child abuse in the death of Amere Carver and 22-year-old Brandee Wright is charged with involuntary manslaughter and child abuse.

Smith’s office says Warren and Wright were dating, and Amere was Wright’s son.

They’re due in court Friday and didn’t have lawyers on record ahead of the hearing.

Investigators say Amere suffered severe head trauma and other serious injuries while in Warren’s care Aug. 11. The prosecutor’s office says Wright returned to their home in Clinton Township to find the child limp and unresponsive. The child died two days later.

This story has been corrected to show that the child was Wright’s son, not Warren’s son, based on updated information from the prosecutor’s office.
