COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Students at the College of Nursing at the University of South Carolina are being honored in a ceremony marking the end of their classroom instruction and entry into clinical work with patients.

The special event is scheduled for Friday at 3:30 p.m. in the Williams Brice Building on Greene Street.

The ceremony for some 210 juniors includes the recitation of a special pledge and the lighting of a lamp. It recalls the profession’s association with Florence Nightingale, who is credited as the founder of modern nursing.

The clinics are located at four major hospitals in the central South Carolina area.

The students are part of the four-year program that works toward a bachelor’s degree in nursing.
