WARWICK, R.I. (AP) - Rhode Island’s second largest city has a new superintendent.

The Warwick School Committee on Wednesday voted to select Philip Thornton as the city’s next superintendent.

Thornton previously served as superintendent of the Cumberland school system for four years.

Warwick Public Schools said in a release Thursday that Thornton would transition from Cumberland to Warwick “as soon as possible,” though it is unclear when exactly that will be.

The release says Thornton received a master’s degree from Providence College and a doctorate from Johnson & Wales University.

Thornton was one of 23 applicants for the job. He replaces William Holland, who has served as interim superintendent since July.
