MONTGOMERY, W.Va. (AP) - West Virginia authorities say a man has been charged with killing his mother with an overdose of morphine.

Fayette County Prosecuting Attorney Larry Harrah and local police said in a statement that 45-year-old Gordon Ray Sutphin II of Montgomery was charged Friday in the July 18 death of 67-year-old Lawanna Sutphin. Gordon Sutphin was being held in jail until a bond hearing could be scheduled.

Authorities say Lawanna Sutphin had a lengthy medical history, so her death initially was not suspicious. Acting on new information, police later investigated and determined that a large amount of morphine killed the woman. She did not have a prescription for the drug, and investigators linked the delivery of the morphine to Gordon Sutphin.

It was unclear whether Sutphin has an attorney.
