PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - Two fishermen have been rescued after their boat sank about 50 miles off the coast of Portland.

The Coast Guard was unable to reach the two men by radio on Friday so it sent a motor life boat from Boothbay Harbor, Maine, and a helicopter from Cape Cod, Massachusetts.

Coast Guard crews in Boothbay Harbor spotted a life raft with two people on it around 4:30 p.m.

The Coast Guard took the men by boat to Boothbay Harbor, where they declined medical attention.

Their names were not released.

A Coast Guard official says the boat “sank right out from underneath them.” She says they had the proper safety equipment like the life raft onboard and were able to get into it quickly, which helped save their lives.
