CHARLESTOWN, R.I. (AP) - The Salt Ponds Coalition is commemorating three decades of monitoring seven saltwater ponds in Rhode Island with a short film.

The Westerly Sun reports (https://bit.ly/1O0L4fX ) the film celebrates the work of the numerous volunteers who have been a part of the organization over the years.

The film will be directed by its former executive director, Vic Dvorak. Dvorak says he used an airplane to get aerial photos of the pond. He says his goal was to showcase the beauty of the salt ponds and share the need for preservation and conservation.

The coalition started in 1984 when a research team from the University of Rhode Island was working to develop a special-area management plan for the salt ponds and discovered that no one was monitoring the condition of the pond.
