ALHAMBRA, Calif. (AP) - A former basketball coach at a Los Angeles-area high school has been arrested on suspicion of sexual assault against a 16-year-old player on his team.

Alhambra police arrested Joseph Kikuchi this week on multiple felony counts of sexual assault, including lewd or lascivious acts against a minor.

Paul Geller, a lawyer for Kikuchi, denied the allegations in an email Friday to the Los Angeles Times (https://lat.ms/1jkWJt8 ).

The 56-year-old coached basketball at Mark Keppel High in Alhambra.

Sgt. Jerry Johnson said Thursday that the investigation was triggered on Sept. 15 when an administrator called the police upon hearing rumors of Kikuchi’s involvement with a student.

Kikuchi was released on $100,000 bail.

Police and representatives in the school district have not responded to requests for comment.
