NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Former Marines Kelsie Owen and Kevin McClendon both have post-traumatic stress disorder - and specially trained dogs are helping them to recover.

Now, the two veterans will learn to train service dogs and to teach other military veterans suffering from the effects of PTSD or other problems how to do so. They’ll be part of a new “Companions for Life” program that will teach veterans to train their own dogs to meet their medical or psychological needs.

Program co-founder William Barse says there are more veterans who want service dogs than available dogs.

So far, four veterans have signed up for the free program starting in October at the Jefferson Parish Animal Shelter. There’s room for six more. Veterans new to dog training are welcome.
