NEW YORK (AP) - Police say a Brooklyn man has been arrested after he shot himself in the groin on a Brooklyn street corner.

The New York Police Department said Javier Thomas was arrested Saturday on weapons possession and reckless endangerment charges.

Authorities said officers had approached Thomas at 1:16 a.m. because he apparently was urinating in the street.

As the officers approached, they heard a gunshot and found Thomas had shot himself in the groin.

Police said it appeared Thomas had mishandled the weapon, causing it to fire.

Officers found a loaded handgun under the passenger tire of a minivan nearby. They allege Thomas tossed it under the car after the accidental shooting.

It was not immediately clear whether Thomas had a lawyer who could comment on his behalf.
