CONCORD, N.H. (AP) - Fall’s only a few days old, yet the state is offering courses for people who want to become a certified salt applicator for New Hampshire’s roads this winter.

The Green SnowPro training courses for winter maintenance are being held in Salem on Sept. 30 and in Portsmouth on Oct. 5. Attendees are eligible for certification by the state Department of Environmental Services. They receive liability protection from ice-related slip-and-fall cases.

Road salt is corrosive, expensive and harmful to drinking water and water bodies. But salt is often necessary to ensure roads and parking lots are safe for the public during storms.

The courses promote safety in winter maintenance on private parking lots and roads including anti-icing, plowing, calibration and record keeping.
