BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - Police say a 9-year-old boy has been hospitalized after a pit bull jumped a fence and attacked him.

Birmingham police spokesman Lt. Sean Edwards says the victim and another child were playing in their backyard when the dog jumped over a 6-foot fence and attacked the boy. Edwards says the boy was taken to Children’s of Alabama and is expected to survive.

Al.com reports (https://bit.ly/1FBBop7 ) that the boy’s mother heard her son’s screams and tried to help. Edwards says one neighbor shot the dog twice and another stuck it with a bat.

The owner of the dog has not yet been located. Animal control officers took the dog, which is still alive.

Police are still investigating the incident.
