WOONSOCKET, R.I. (AP) - A father and his young son have been injured after falling from their third-story apartment balcony in Woonsocket.

WLNE-TV reports (https://bit.ly/1Vhm88b) the 30-year-old man and 5-year-old boy were taken to hospitals with moderate injuries Sunday morning.

Woonsocket Police Detective Sgt. Matthew Ryan said the extent of their injuries wasn’t immediately available but both were conscious and alert when they were transported. Police and firefighters responded about 10:20 a.m. to the 9th Avenue apartment.

WLNE reports a balcony railing gave way. The landlord tells the station the balcony had been deemed unsafe by the city and was being repaired, and residents knew they weren’t supposed to use it.

Neighbors said the man was trying to throw trash over the railing when he fell about 30 feet. The boy reportedly tried to help his father, then fell himself.
